DEBEM, FROST, VELASQUEZ, AND SQUATRITTO TAKE OCEAN WINS DURING HALL OF FAME NIGHT
WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (August 8, 2025) – Caleb Debem extended his Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo points lead during Friday night’s Hall of Fame Night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, where all four divisions had narrow battles for victory. 1990 and 1991 track champion Jeff Silva was inducted into the Hall of Fame in opening ceremonies. Cotati’s Jake Haulot paced time trials for the Taco Bravo Sprints. Gilroy’s Kurt Nelson, in his farewell season, snared the Gizdich Ranch Dash to earn the pole for the 25-lap feature.
Nelson quickly grabbed the top spot over Debem at the drop of the green flag. Nelson built up a five car length lead under sizzling fast track conditions. Nelson went to slide the slower car of Adrianna DeMartini in Brentwood to put her a lap down in turn one. The pair collided, sending DeMartini on a wild flip out of turn two. She was uninjured.
The red flag on lap 10 thrust Debem into the top spot. Debem faced a challenge from Yuba City’s Seth Standley, who ran up on Debem’s bumper on lap 15 in turn four. Debem hit his marks over the final ten circuits to stretch out his advantage for his first win of the season. Standley settled for second ahead of Haulot, Jason Chisum of Salinas and Jennifer Osborne of Geyserville. Kelseyville traveler Dryver Dothage won the Mr. Pickles of Morgan Hill Hard Charger for $100.
The 20-lap Hobby Stock feature lined up 16 entries and came down to the final lap before a winner was decided. Watsonville’s Lilly Mead snatched the lead from Adriane Frost on lap six up the inside of the backstretch. Mead encountered heavy lapped traffic in the final two trips around the speedway.
Coming into turn one on the final lap, Frost clipped the back of Mead and drove past her to take the victory. Mead slid sideways after the contact, spinning to a stop in front of the field on the backstretch. The ensuing crash involved multiple cars including Corralitos’ Norm Ayers. Morgan Hill’s Jim DiGiovanni avoided the melee to finish second followed by Wayne Reeder, Bobby Gallaher, and points leader Ryan Hart.
South Bay Dwarf Cars also had last-lap excitement in their 20-lap feature with Nick Velasquez of Camarillo leading just the final corner of the race. Hollister’s Chris Durden won the initial battle with Velasquez for the lead at the drop of the green flag. They ran within a car length of each other throughout the contest. Eddy Claessen of Monterrey climbed the backstretch wall and fence for a flip to bring out a red flag on lap nine. He was uninjured.
Velasquez kept himself within arms length of Durden in lapped traffic on the final lap. Velasquez drove inside Durden in turn three and edged ahead at the finish line to take the narrow and exciting victory. Duren finished second followed by Joe Barket of Morro Bay, Jason Lazzerini, and Toby Brown.
Cameron Squatritto of Gilroy won his second Four Banger main event of the season. Squattrito attempted to pass race leader Amaya Flower of Watsonville on the inside to no avail, then took his No. 12 Dodge to the high side to lead lap six. Points leader Joshua Silva of Watsonville pursued Squatritto throughout the race but was unable to make a passing maneuver. Squatritto led Silva, Joseph Silva, David Dupuis, and Peter Vannerus at the finish.
