DEREK COPELAND WINS SHASTA SPEEDWAY SUPER LATE MODELS FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE TRIUMPH

ANDERSON, Calif. (June 1, 2025) – Anderson’s Derek Copeland enjoyed back-to-back victories in the Shasta Speedway Super Late Model program, taking Saturday’s 125-lap feature in a narrow win over Oregon’s David Miller. Copeland has won the first two rounds of the five race campaign in a bid towards the lucrative $10,000 championship. “About 30 laps to go, I had no brakes,” Copeland said. “Luckily the brake pedal came back up otherwise David (Miller) would have got me. He got into me a little bit there but that’s racing and he let me go. That’s what racing is all about.”

Copeland paced time trials on the .375-mile oval over an outstanding 17-car field for the $2,000 to win feature. Fort Bragg’s Lane Anderson led the field to green with Copeland starting out of fourth. Copeland quickly drove to the top spot by lap nine and comfortably paced the action behind him. Miller seized second from Anderson on lap 31 with a 1.4 second gap behind Copeland.

Miller ran down Copeland with 15 laps to go, running on his rear bumper in a narrow duel. The caution flew on lap 116 when Anderson crashed hard in turn one rear first. Melanie Schmitt and Jerry Peterson were also involved.

Copeland used the red flag for cleanup to cool his brakes, charging ahead from Miller on the final stretch for the victory. Miller settled for second followed by Stockton’s Joey Stearns, Tom Haffer of Central Point, Oregon, and Schmitt.

2020 Lakeport Speedway champion Kylie Daniels of Fort Bragg won the $500 prize in the INEX Legends 35-lap feature. Buddy Cox spun from the pole on the backstretch at the start of the race. Daniels worked around the outside of Joe Brattolli to take the lead on lap 11. Daniels led young Kai Lovell, her younger brother Trey Daniels, Jarrett Dickson, and Deeahmee Malone at the checkered flag.

Lodi’s Brandon Jones put his stamp on the 30-lap Bomber feature, with the former Stockton 99 Speedway champion winning by a healthy four second margin over a 13-car field of competitors. Scott MacLeod finished second followed by David Dillinger, opening night winner Kyle Borden, and Trevor Harrison.

Braden Smith climbed aboard the opening night winning car of Peter Smith and promptly won Saturday’s 25-lap Hornet main event.

After a photo finish drag race in round one, the Hornets were a part of more exciting side-by-side action in round two. The top-eight drivers ran under a two- and three-wide blanket all the way to the finish in a closely matched race with less than a second separating them.

Smith topped Gavin Smith and Colton Stankey after the exciting battle.

Round three of the Shasta Speedway championship divisions of the Super Late Models, INEX Legends, Bombers, and Hornets returns to the track on June 28th.
