Two young drivers had their breakout moments during the Madera SpeedFest season opener on March 16. 12-year-old Vito Cancilla of Martinez became the youngest Pro Late Model Series winner in track history, eclipsing the previous record set by eventual NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Cole Custer of Ladera Ranch, Calif. 13-year-old Cam Carraway of Castro Valley scored his first career Jr. Late Model Series triumph, earning Nascimento Motorsports its 14th win in the last 19 points races for the division.

Cancilla swept around his teammate Eric “Bubba” Nascimento for the win, after inheriting the lead from his 17-year-old teammate Henry Barton of San Fransisco. Barton dominated the second half of the 100-lap SpeedFest and was poised for his first career win. Barton returns on Saturday night to try to avenge the bitter defeat after running out of fuel with three laps to go. Matt Erickson of La Grange paced the first 44 circuits before a rare failure of his engine, while Clovis’ Shelden Cooper was bounced from the race in an early race crash as well. They will be among the drivers hungry to recapture success on Saturday night.

Oakdale’s Blaine Rocha, 2023 Pro Late Model Series champion Tyler Herzog of Fresno, Nascimento, and Ryan Reynolds followed Cancilla as the top-five finishers in the season opener.

The Pro Late Model Series powered by Mission Foods will run an 80-lap feature across a 50-lap opening segment and a 30-lap run to the finish.

Cam Carraway prevailed over an inexperienced and exciting new field of 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model Series drivers during the opener. The 70-lap race for drivers ages 10-16 years old went green without a single prior winner in the field. Carraway became the first to put himself into the win column. 14-year-old Rowdy Rupinski of Rathdrum, Idaho finished second followed by 12-year-old Jacob Ryan, 13-year-old Jace Hale, and 12-year-old Skyler Schoppe.

Another 70-lap affair awaits, split across a 40-lap opening run followed by a 30-lap sprint to determine the MAVTV-televised victor!

The INEX Legends have consistently delivered outstanding car counts to Madera with their spec 5/8ths scaled race cars. Legends will switch from a touring visitor to a championship contending division in 2024 with a full field of drivers from across California converging at the centrally located Madera Speedway for a 30-lap race. Jeremy Doss, Colton Page, and Ethan Nascimento claimed Legends wins at Madera last year while Barton won the touring overall championship.

2023 INEX Bandolero champion Kaine Betancourt picked up where he left off by dominating the main event during the Madera SpeedFest. Betancourt aims to continue to accumulate wins in Saturday’s 20-lap race.

Action gets underway on Friday with practice from 5pm until 8:30pm with pit gates opening at 3pm. On Saturday, pit gates open at noon with practice at 2pm. Qualifying hits the track at 4:10pm. Heat races will follow, followed by opening ceremonies at 6:00pm.
