SALMON AND MOGNAGA COMPLETE SWEEPS OF THE SIZZLER AT DELTA

STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (June 17, 2018) – Raio Salmon and Dan Mognaga topped strong fields in the Super 600 and Non Wing divisions respectively, each winning both nights of the Summer Sizzler this weekend at Delta Speedway.  The Financial Center Credit Union-sponsored races saw both drivers win a total of $1500 each for their efforts including $500 double-up bonuses.

The Micro Sprint action on the 1/7th mile dirt oval took place with the San Joaquin County Fair as the backdrop in a festive and exciting evening.  88 cars competed across the four divisions.

A zero inversion placed Stockton’s Nikko Panella on the pole position alongside Friday night fast time qualifier Caden Sarale for the Super 600 feature.  Sarale led the 22 car field early with third starting Salmon in tow from third as well.  The first caution waved on lap nine and a caution waved again on lap ten for Koen Shaw and Adam Kaeding tangled up.  Salmon took over second place from Panella on lap 12.

Salmon began to climb towards Sarale as the field hit traffic before another caution on lap 20.  Matt Peterson used the outside to take third from Panella and made the race up front a three car duel.  Sarale and Salmon maintained the inside line in a close fight until the final lap.  Sarale opened the door for Salmon coming out of turn four, allowing her to come through for the thrilling $500 victory at the stripe with Sarale, Peterson, Panella, and Ryan Delisle the top-five finishers.

Dan Mognaga had close company in his Non Wing feature on Saturday night just as he did in Friday’s 30 lap feature as well.  The race featured an eight car inversion like Friday as well, with Mognaga starting on the pole.  Mognaga set a strong pace up front early for the first 11 laps with the field reaching lapped traffic early before the first yellow for Kevin Carter coming to a stop in turn two.

Tyler “TJ” Smith found trouble once again as he spun from fourth place and was unable to rejoin the field for his second consecutive DNF.  Stockton’s Caden Sarale and Madera Ranchos’ Dalton Hill battled hard for the third position behind Mitchel Moles.  Moles surrendered second to Hill on lap 22 and then had to face off with Sarale for third.

Hill tried to close down on Mognaga and on the final lap the duo nearly went side-by-side but Mognaga held on for the weekend sweep ahead of Hill, Moles, Sarale, and Koen Shaw.

Caeden Steele improved from a fourth place effort on Friday night to win Saturday’s Restricted 25 lap feature.  The eight car inversion placed Steele on the pole which he used to his advantage to jump out to a quick 1.5 second lead into lapped traffic.  The caution finally flew for the first time just past halfway on lap 13 for Hailey Wood and Jarrett Rogers.

Mattix Salmon was running in the second position by that point which he managed to maintain ahead of Logan Trevino and Friday winner Dylan Bloomfield of Discovery Bay.  Trevino and Bloomfield had contact that cost them some positions which allowed Caden Stoll to jump up to third.  Caeden Steele took the victory leading all 25 laps over Salmon in a career best second place.  Stoll, Ashlyn Rodriguez, and Jeffrey Pahule, Jr. rounded out the top-five.

Visalia’s Jett Barnes avenged mechanical woes from Friday night to win Saturday’s Summer Sizzler feature from the outside pole position.  Friday winner Dalton Parreira was second ahead of TK O’Brien with back-to-back podium finishes.  Austin Wood and Prunedale’s Caleb Debem made up the balance of the top-five.

Delta Speedway’s championship points action takes a break on June 27th when the California Speedweek comes to compete.  More than $54,000 in prizes are up for grabs across the four night event that has attracted entries from 12 states, Australia, and Canada.  Delta Speedway hosts the second night of the week that runs June 26th-30th.
