MOGNAGA GRABS OPENING NIGHT SUMMER SIZZLER NON WING WIN AT DELTA

STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (June 15, 2018) – 2010 & 2011 Delta Speedway Non Wing champion Dan Mognaga made his return to victory lane Friday night, taking night #1 of the Summer Sizzler at the 1/7th mile dirt oval.  The races presented by Financial Center Credit Union took place during the San Joaquin County Fair as well.

An eight car inversion for all the full sized classes brought on extra excitement.  Santa Maria’s Bryce Eames led lap one of the Non Wing 30 lap feature but surrendered the lead to Mognaga on lap two.  Fresno’s Colton Jones tried to claw towards Mognaga while eighth starting Tyler “TJ” Smith tried high, low, and through the middle to get to the front.  Clinton Heck stopped in turn one for the first yellow on lap nine.  Smith moved up into third past Australian-born Danny Carroll but it was nullified by a caution for Mike Graves spinning in turn three.

Mike Wasina had a wild flip on lap 13 for the next stoppage.  Leo Rubio was eliminated from the race after running into the flipped over car as well.  Smith reported to the infield under the red with an a clutch problem.  San Bruno’s Angelina Dempsey passed five cars over two laps to advance up to sixth during some exciting battling.

Mitchel Moles and Jones got together in turn three to bring a yellow out with just two laps to go.  Jones was able to continue on to take a run at Mognaga in a two lap shooout.  Jones dove inside Mognaga on the final lap down the backstretch.  Mognaga shut the door into turn three to take the $500 checkered flag ahead of Jones, Carroll, Madera Ranchos’ Dalton Hill, and Dempsey.

Former Jr. Sprint champion Dylan Bloomfield of Discovery Bay inherited a great starting position due to the Restricted inversion and led all 25 laps for his first career win.  The first caution came out on lap one when Hailey Wood spun in turn four.

An incident involving Sage Bordenave and Blaine Baxter forced a red flag on lap 13 while the leaders were busy navigating heavy traffic.  Tenth starting Caeden Steele had worked up to sixth place by that point.  On the restart Steele took over fourth from two-time winner Stoll before Stoll immediately took the position back.  Bordenave tried to nurse a heavily damaged car before he climbed the fence in turn three for a lap 20 caution.

Bloomfield would not be denied en route to his first career Delta Restricted victory.  Stoll advanced to second ahead of Logan Trevino, Steele, and fast-time qualifier Ashlyn Rodriguez from eighth.

Adam Kaeding dropped back quickly on the green to start the 30 lap Super 600 feature, bringing third starting Raio Salmon around pole sitter Travis Labat.  Salmon, second in points and winner of the Saturday portion of the 2017 Sizzler, quickly pulled away from the 2014 track champion Labat.

2015 Restricted champion Caden Sarale started eighth and rocketed to third by lap six.  Salmon attempted to lap Kaeding on lap 16 in a rather quick reversal of fortunes.  West Sacramento’s Jessica McManus slowed in turn three to necessitate a caution on lap 19.  The yellow put fast-timer Sarale in the cat bird seat to challenge from third.

Salmon proved too strong as she drove away for the $500 win while Labat maintained second ahead of Sarale.  Brad Hannum and Nikko Panella rounded out the top-five.

Dalton Parreira became the first repeat winner of 2018 in the Jr. Sprint division, taking the 20 lap feature wire-to-wire.

The race was halted immediately on the first lap when Colton Key and Lucas Mauldin had dueling flips in turn one.  The flip for Mauldin was his second of the evening and ended his night.

Both Prunedale’s Caleb Debem and Visalia’s Jett Barnes struggled with mechanical problems and ducked in and out of the infield pits multiple times.

The final caution flew on lap nine when Key and Selena Little tangled while trying to put a lap on Mason Smith.  Parreira motored away from Austin Wood on that restart to never look back with TK O’Brien overcoming a heat race incident to finish a strong third.

Night two of the Summer Sizzler at Delta Speedway is on tap for Saturday night with another complete night of points racing.  The San Joaquin County Fair continues next door as well.
