SMITH OUTDUELS SARALE IN NON WING THRILLER AT DELTA SPEEDWAY

STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (May 5, 2018) – Tyler Smith earned every bit of his $500 en-route to his second consecutive Delta Speedway presented by Financial Center Credit Union victory on Saturday night, out-dueling 2017 Non Wing Rookie of the Year Caden Sarale for the win.

106 Micro Sprints graced the 1/7th mile dirt oval at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds for another triple digit effort for the four championship points divisions.

The Non-Wing festivities led the way with 40 entries and the feature started with Brandon Carey and Chad Laughton spinning  in turn two.  The resulting melee saw Dan Mognaga flip over in turn two.  All three were done for the evening while Thomas Leiby had a small tip over slowing for the resulting red but he continued.

James Ringo slowed considerably on the following restart and eventually surrendered to the pits as well.

Tyler Smith built up a straightaway lead that evaporated on lap eight when Chris Alexander spun on the front stretch on lap eight.  Tristan Guardino followed Smith in close formation riding the cushion.  Guardino sailed in for a lap 20 slide-job in traffic to take the lead on lap 21.  Guardino started to count the $500 first place prize before getting tagged by a lapped car in turn four and coming to a stop for a caution.

Guardino had to restart at the tail of the pack while Smith faced a new challenger in second year Non Wing driver Caden Sarale.  Sarale and Smith traded slide jobs in a cross cross fashion over the final four laps.  Sarale made one more attempt in turn three but Smith crossed him over, ducking inside for the car length win.  Kevin Carter was third ahead of Brent Brooks and Adam Kaeding.

Keith Day Jr. returned to Super 600 victory lane with that win also paying $500.  Raio Salmon led the opening nine laps before Day slid past her to take the lead in turn two.  Fast-time qualifier Nikko Panella battled side-by-side with Salmon for several laps before the young Panella took second on lap 16.  Tim Vaught spun trying to take third from Salmon on lap 21, which also erased Day’s advantage on Panella when the caution flew.

Day had a masterful restart while Mike Rich and Blake Bower put on a battle reminiscent of the NHL Playoffs with lots of contact.  The battle ended when Vincent Duggan took them three wide into turn three and spun out.  The caution set up a two lap shootout between Day and Panella, but Day again had a perfect restart to drive away for the win ahead of Panella, Salmon, Labat, and Rich.  Colton Huelsmann won $100 for finishing 16th in the Tel-Tac award.

Restricted had its wildest moment at the start of the race when Ryan Rocha sailed over the top of Sage Bordenave in turn four to bring out a red flag.  When racing resumed, outside pole sitter Caeden Steele paced the action.  Tyler Martin of Fresno tagged the backstretch wall for a caution on lap 11.

Tulsa Shootout winner Corey Day kept Steele closely in his sights but he couldn’t close down enough for a passing attempt.  Steele grabbed the $300 win over Day, Katey Syra, opening night winner Caden Stoll, and Brody Petrie.

Junior Sprints are the youngest drivers at Delta Speedway and they had likely the roughest feature of the bunch.  Peyton Whitehouse flipped hard in turn one for a stoppage right at the start.  She was unhurt but done for the night.  TK O’Brien led the opening lap.  Four abreast battling at the front saw Jett Barnes cut underneath O’Brien before a caution on lap one for Colton Key spinning in turn two.  Barnes took the lead on lap two with Austin Wood following him through.

Wood hounded Barnes for the lead, but spun in turn two for a caution on lap four.

Dalton Parreira charged up to second on the restart then reeled in Barnes.  Parreira sailed inside Barnes in turn one on lap 16 and Barnes closed the door to go spinning.  Barnes then tangled with Mason Smith coming back to the green flag on the restart, ending his evening with two cautions.

Parreira led the final three laps of the feature ahead of Wood and O’Brien.

Delta Speedway continues May 19th with its next points race and round of the King of California four track series.
